Ashe County Chamber of Commerce

Bluff Mountain Nature Preserve is one of three unique and challenging hiking opportunities in Ashe County.

Bluff Mountain is a privately owned preserve, and one of the most ecologically significant sites in the Southeast. The mountain's unique geology, hydrology and ecology intertwine to create an unusual mixture of habitats and wildlife. The hike is approximately two miles over rocky terrain of medium difficulty and takes about four hours. Guided hikes by appointment only. Call 336-385-6507 for more information.

Other scenic hikes include:

The New River State Park, offering rugged hillsides, pastoral meadows and bucolic farmlands surrounding one of the oldest rivers in the world, the New River. Enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, picnicking and much more. Access the park eight miles southeast of Jefferson, 1.2 miles east of the intersection of NC 16 and NC 88 or 8 miles northeast of Jefferson, by taking Hwy. 221.

Serving as an area landmark in Ashe County, Mt. Jefferson State Park offers great hiking trails, educational seminars, picnicking and much more. Mount Jefferson rises abruptly to more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, serving as a landmark for area motorists. Acquaint yourself with this mighty peak by viewing it first from the Mount Jefferson Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then, drive to the top by following Mount Jefferson Road, park and take a short hike to the summit. On a clear day, you can see for miles from its peak.
