Music and Art in the High Country
Ashe County Chamber of Commerce

Over the past twenty years the art "scene" in Ashe County has slowly blossomed to life, penetrating first West Jefferson, then Jefferson, then Lansing and then every part of Ashe County through Barn Quilts and artists' studios, murals and even fireplugs.

Visual art has joined performance art as a mainstay of the cultural scene in Ashe County, joining the many theatre performances large and small at the Ashe Civic Center and at the Ashe Arts Center - primarily on weekends, but occasionally throughout the week as well.

These more traditional venues of performing arts are joined by what have traditionally taken place in Ashe County for the past century and a half - the pick-and-grin "jam sessions" on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in old barns or feed stores or general stores around the county.

The great thing is, you can still drop into one of these old-time jam sessions from Todd to Creston to neighborhood Volunteer Fire Department fish fries and "pig pickin's" where the local band picks and ladies push back their yard chairs to dance and clog in the grass.

No matter what your taste is in entertainment, there is something for you - from art to poetry to bluegrass to jazz to symphony orchestra - year-round - in Ashe County. Come join us!
